How Long Does an Aptos Thread Lift Last? Results and Limits

An Aptos thread lift is often expected to last about 1–2 years, but it does not suddenly stop working on a set date, and not everyone gets the full two years. You can see the tissue lifted immediately after treatment, and the contour usually looks more natural after about 1–2 weeks. The result then fades gradually based on your original degree of laxity, the weight of your facial fat, and ongoing aging. When the threads are absorbed, how much visible lift remains, and when treatment is worth repeating are three different questions.

Watch out: Do not judge the result only by whether the threads remain

When people ask how long the result lasts, three things are easy to mix together: how long the threads take to be absorbed, how much lift is still visible, and when the treatment is worth repeating. These three timelines do not coincide. A 1–2 year range is useful for setting expectations, but it does not mean you will look the same as you did immediately after treatment for two years or that you must repeat treatment as soon as that period ends.

Start with what Aptos actually changes

Aptos uses long barbed threads to move soft tissue that has shifted downward back toward a higher position. The clearest visible changes are a sharper jawline, jowls that sit higher, and a mid-to-lower face contour that no longer pulls downward as much. It does not dissolve fat or fill hollow areas.

We currently use EVHA most often. One box contains ten 19 cm threads made with PLLA and an HA coating. The material name alone cannot predict your result. The direction of lift, tissue weight, original degree of laxity, and the support paths formed by the threads all affect how long the visible result lasts.

Immediate lift, natural settling, and gradual fading are three stages

Immediately after treatment, the threads have already moved the tissue upward, so the lift does not usually take months to appear. Swelling, tightness, or localized unevenness may also be present, so the same-day appearance is not the final result. In my clinical experience, the contour gradually settles into a more natural shape after about 1–2 weeks.

After that, the support does not switch abruptly between “working” and “not working.” It becomes weaker gradually. Aptos P(LA/CL) threads break down over time. The manufacturer describes complete absorption at about 1.5–2 years and a tissue response during degradation, but that is a material timeline and cannot be used as each person’s visible-results deadline. See the manufacturer’s information on thread composition and absorption.

One study of P(LA/CL) threads with HA followed 26 people who received a mid-to-lower face lift and still observed facial lift and skin-quality changes at 12 months. This supports the possibility that results can still be visible after one year. The study was small and used a specific thread and a fixed number of threads, so it cannot establish the same degree of durability for everyone. See the 12-month follow-up study.

Based on the thread characteristics and my clinical experience, I use about 1–2 years as a common range to expect for Aptos. “Range” is the key word: some people remain satisfied after one year, while others with heavier tissue, ongoing aging, or expectations of a larger change may feel that the result is insufficient sooner.

Whether a second treatment is worthwhile depends on more than the date

If the direction of the first lift was correct and the tissue gradually shifts downward again, repeating treatment may help maintain the benefit of that approach. On the other hand, if what you see after one year is natural aging and your contour is still more stable than it was before treatment, there is no need to repeat the treatment simply because the calendar says so.

I first divide “my face looks saggy now” into three possibilities. The first is true soft-tissue descent, such as jowls that have shifted downward and a less defined jawline. That is when a thread lift is more likely to match the problem. The second is heavier facial fat, whose weight makes the contour look lower; pulling with threads alone may not address the underlying cause. The third is hollowing in the cheeks or temples. Shadows can look like sagging, and another thread lift may make the hollowing more visible. In that case, the right direction is to assess volume rather than keep pulling.

With marked laxity or substantial excess skin, a thread lift may offer limited improvement. Suitability still needs an in-person assessment.

If the actual laxity is mild and neither the skin nor deeper tissues show a clear area that needs lifting, I do not arrange a thread lift simply as “early maintenance.” Age is not an indication either. Whether the treatment is worthwhile depends on whether the face shows a problem that Aptos can change.

Why I use Aptos instead of placing only single barbed threads

This comes from my own treatment experience. When I used to place standard barbed threads one at a time, the immediate result could look good, but some faces did not have enough support and settled downward more easily afterward. With longer Aptos threads, I can cross several paths to create a broader plane of tension. I have found the tension and durability better with this approach, so I consider it first when a clear mechanical lift is needed.

This does not mean Aptos lasts longer than every barbed thread in every face, and crossed paths cannot be converted into a fixed thread-count ratio. The thread name is only one factor. Treatment depth, fixation direction, and facial tissue conditions also shape the result. For someone without clear sagging, stronger threads do not by themselves make a thread lift appropriate.

The 1–2 year figure is an expected range, not a guarantee. Study follow-up, thread absorption, and the duration of visible results are not interchangeable.
Time pointWhat you may usually seeHow to assess it then
Immediately after treatment The lift from the threads is already visible, but swelling and tightness can also affect your appearanceLook at the direction of the lift first; do not judge the final result by same-day asymmetry or tightness
About 1–2 weeks Swelling and localized unevenness usually begin to ease, and the contour starts to settle naturallyUse the same angle and expression to compare the jawline, jowls, and cheek position
Several months to about 1 year The lift usually remains visible, but it will not stay as tight as it looked immediately after treatmentCheck whether the laxity you originally wanted to improve has actually changed; do not treat natural aging as treatment failure
About 1–2 years In my clinical practice, I use this as a common range to expect; the result fades graduallyDo not repeat treatment automatically by the calendar; first separate laxity, heavy facial fat, and hollowing

What we do

  • Our rule

I do not recommend repeating it simply because a year has passed. I first look at how much result remains and which tissue layer now needs attention.

FAQ

How long does an Aptos thread lift last?
In clinical practice, about 1–2 years is a common range to expect, but the result fades gradually and is not a fixed duration for everyone.
How long does an Aptos thread lift take to look natural?
The lift is visible immediately and usually looks more natural after about 1–2 weeks. Bruising and swelling still vary by person.
Do the results disappear as soon as Aptos threads are absorbed?
No. The visible result already fades gradually and does not drop to zero on the day the material is absorbed. Thread presence alone does not define the result.
Should I repeat Aptos after one year?
Not necessarily. First assess the remaining lift and the current problem. If fat or hollowing is the main issue, another thread lift may miss the cause.
Does Aptos necessarily last much longer than a standard barbed thread?
The brand alone cannot answer that. Thread structure, placement path, fixation, and facial anatomy all affect the result.
