How should a foreigner choose a Korean skin clinic in Seoul, and how do you read Reddit, Dcard and PTT reviews and "best skin clinics in Seoul" lists?

Short answer

Best-of lists and reviews only give you clinic names; they do not tell you whether a clinic suits your face. Good reviews also show up more because the people it worked for tend to write more. Once you have candidates, look them up on the Medical Korea site (Korea Health Industry Development Institute) to see whether they are registered to treat foreign patients, ask whether the doctor who consults you also performs the treatment, and for Thermage, check that the tip is opened in front of you. It also helps to know in advance where to turn if something goes wrong.

Why are lists of the best skin clinics in Korea and their reviews hard to take at face value?

Lists of recommended Korean skin clinics often do not show who chose those clinics or why, so they are better used to gather candidates than trusted as they are. Korea saw 2.01 million foreign patients in 2025, and 62.9% of them were dermatology patients. Patients from Taiwan numbered 185,715, up 122.5% from the year before. That many patients means that many clinics and agencies trying to bring them in, and that many lists.

In Korea, it is legal for an agency that refers a patient to receive a commission from the clinic. A Ministry of Health and Welfare notice caps the commission a clinic-level provider pays a facilitator at 30% of the medical fee. So some lists may be lists of “clinics with a commission contract” rather than “good clinics”. Unregistered brokers taking excessive referral fees have also been reported to still exist, and Taiwan’s Minister of Health and Welfare has said that brokering overseas cosmetic treatment from within Taiwan is illegal. How price and responsibility change when you go through a broker is covered in how to book directly with a clinic.

A list tells you a clinic’s name and nothing more. Whether that clinic fits your concern, and who treats you and how, has to be checked separately, as below.

What should you look for in Reddit, Dcard and PTT reviews?

In Reddit, Dcard and PTT reviews, look less at the conclusion that “it was good” and more at whether the writer’s concern is the same as yours and whether they describe how the treatment was done. Reviews tend to lean positive from the start. Take Thermage: people it suits well are more satisfied than with many other treatments, so they write reviews eagerly. People who did not feel much effect are often unsure themselves, so they rarely say so strongly. Because the treatment is expensive, this gap feels large, and more of the first kind of story stays online.

So the first thing to check in a review is whether the concern is the same. Thermage tightens the skin surface and suits fine lines, pores, skin texture and loss of firmness. If your concern is jowls or sagging above the nasolabial folds, Ultherapy is often a better fit than Thermage. A happy review from someone who had Thermage for pores is weak evidence for someone whose concern is sagging cheeks.

Next, see whether the treatment process is described. Faces sag for different reasons in different people. Sometimes the superficial fat layer droops, sometimes the SMAS loosens, and sometimes lost volume causes the sagging. With the same number of Ultherapy lines, working while checking skin thickness and response area by area gives a different result from running through quickly and evenly and finishing. Thermage is also a device whose results vary with technique, so some people may find it had no effect. A review that says “the doctor looked at these areas and divided the treatment like this” tells you more than one that only says “this device, this many shots”.

Read price reviews the same way. The same treatment can be done by sweeping one layer once and finishing, or by checking the distribution layer by layer and addressing each point. Some cosmetic treatments are simple and come out much the same whoever does them, while others take more care, and price differences usually come from there. Comparing only the price per shot side by side hides this difference.

How do you check whether a clinic is registered to treat foreign patients?

In Korea, a clinic that wants to attract foreign patients must register with the provincial or metropolitan governor under the Act on Support for Overseas Expansion of Medical Services and Attraction of Foreign Patients, and anyone can check registration on the Medical Korea site run by the Korea Health Industry Development Institute (KHIDI). To register, a clinic must carry medical malpractice liability insurance (or belong to a medical liability mutual aid association), and registration has to be renewed every 3 years.

Here is how to check.

  1. Go to Medical Korea Registered Hospitals.
  2. Search by the clinic’s English name, or narrow down by Region.
  3. Match the registration number, address and phone number in the results against what the clinic told you and the address shown on the map.

Agencies that are not clinics must register separately. They need to meet requirements such as capital, guarantee insurance and an office in Korea, and they can be looked up in the Registered Facilitators list on the same site. If you go through an agency, look up both the clinic and the agency.

Being registered means the clinic meets the legal requirements to receive foreign patients. It is not a ranking of how well it treats. Use registration as a minimum check, and base your choice on who treats you and how, as in the sections below.

How do you check that the device and tips are genuine?

For Thermage, check whether a new tip is opened in front of you just before treatment. For Ultherapy, the right check is whether the device itself is genuine, not whether there is a “new tip”. The two devices use consumables differently, so they cannot be checked the same way.

With Thermage tips, cases of harm from unapproved tips or illegally refurbished tips (used tips reused) have been known in the industry. The director of SKINLIFT SEOUL (Dr. Designer Clinic, Yeongdeungpo, Seoul) always opens the Thermage tip together with the patient and shows it. When booking, ask “Will the tip be opened in front of me?”, and on the day, watch it happen.

Ultherapy transducers (tips) are not single-use to begin with, so asking for a new transducer to be opened is not the right question. Instead, according to the manufacturer’s side, with the Ultherapy PRIME device you can hold your phone to the secure NFC chip on the device to check that it is genuine without installing an app, and then scan the QR code on the transducer to see the tip’s authentication information too. What to ask for other devices and consumables, product by product, is covered in what to watch out for with aesthetic treatment in Korea.

Is a clinic with English or Chinese consultation a good clinic? Who should consult you?

Being able to consult in Chinese or English means the clinic is easy to contact; whether it suits you is judged by “does the doctor who consults you perform the treatment?” Having coordinators for interpreting and booking is a good thing, but deciding what to do to your face, and how much, is the doctor’s job.

This matters because the same treatment gives different results depending on that judgment. Where and how energy is delivered depends on whether the sagging comes from the superficial fat layer, the SMAS or lost volume. If the doctor who assessed this at the consultation is not the person who actually holds the device, it is hard for the patient to know whether that judgment carries through to the treatment table. When booking, ask in a full sentence: “Does the doctor who consults me perform the treatment? Who is that doctor?” How to find out how consultation and treatment are split on site is covered separately in the assembly-line clinic story in Korean aesthetics.

At SKINLIFT SEOUL (Dr. Designer Clinic, Yeongdeungpo, Seoul), the director decides what to do at the in-person consultation and the same director then performs the treatment. We do not use brokering agencies, and the price is the same as Korean patients pay.

Where can you get help if something goes wrong after treatment in Korea?

If talks with the clinic do not go well after treatment in Korea, foreign patients can ask the Medical Korea Support Center for interpreting and complaint counseling, and if it comes to claiming compensation, they can apply for mediation to the Korea Medical Dispute Mediation and Arbitration Agency (K-medi). In an emergency where symptoms are getting worse quickly, getting seen at a local hospital comes before any of these channels.

Complaints and disputes involving foreign patients are rising. Cases filed with the Medical Korea Support Center were reported to have grown from 22 in 2020 to 214 in 2024. These are the channels to know in advance.

K-medi accepts an English application form by email, and its site also has information in Chinese. There are points to know, though. If the clinic named in the application does not state within 14 days that it will take part, the application is dismissed. If it proceeds, the compensation is set within 90 days (up to 120 days), and a concluded mediation or arbitration has the same effect as a court judgment. If the amount claimed is under ₩5 million, the fee is ₩22,000, and exchange-rate gains or losses on refunds are not covered.

Since 2016, every registered foreign patient provider has had to carry medical malpractice liability insurance. Whichever channel you use, things move faster when there is a record of what you received, so before leaving the clinic, check what to watch out for with aesthetic treatment in Korea for the documents to take with you.
