Why and how should I do Sculptra massage after treatment? What is the Sculptra 5 5 5 massage?
After Sculptra treatment, massage the entire treated area evenly. At our clinic, we instruct you to continue at home for 5 days, 5 times a day, for 5 minutes each time. Immediately after treatment, the medical team performs the first even massage. The “5 5 5 massage” is shorthand for these instructions of 5 days, 5 times a day, and 5 minutes each time, and the U.S. FDA patient labeling gives the same number of times and duration.
At home, rub the whole treated area evenly for 5 minutes each time without missing any part. The purpose is to spread the injected Sculptra broadly so it does not collect in one place. Follow the massage direction and pressure shown to you by the medical team immediately after treatment.
However, we do not say that massage alone can prevent nodules. In a small randomized trial of 20 people, divided into groups of 10 that did or did not perform the 5 5 5 massage, neither group developed nodules, and there was no significant difference in efficacy. We recommend following the massage instructions, but our first priority in reducing nodule risk is to inject at the proper depth and distribute Sculptra broadly rather than letting it collect in one place. How many days do Sculptra swelling, bruising, and soreness last?
Based on our clinic’s guidance, redness, swelling, and soreness after Sculptra usually last about 1–3 days. Bruising and pain when the area is pressed can also occur after the injections.
The U.S. FDA patient labeling also explains that injection-related reactions such as swelling, bruising, and tenderness usually resolve within a few hours to a few days. They occasionally last longer, so tell the clinic where you were treated if swelling or pain keeps getting worse or persists.
How should I handle exercise, sun, makeup, and icing during Sculptra recovery?
Most people can return to their usual activities immediately after Sculptra, but the U.S. FDA patient labeling advises avoiding or limiting strenuous exercise, strong sunlight or ultraviolet exposure, tanning, and very hot or cold environments during the first 24 hours. These can bring on temporary redness, swelling, pain, or itching at the injection sites.
To reduce swelling, you can wrap ice or an ice pack in a cloth and apply it to the treated area within the first 24 hours. Do not place ice directly on the skin. You can apply makeup a few hours after treatment if there are no problems such as open wounds or bleeding.
Can I fly home the day after Sculptra?
There is no problem with flying home the day after Sculptra. We consider it fine to fly the next day after any treatment performed at our clinic, not only Sculptra. The U.S. FDA patient labeling also says that most people can return to their usual activities immediately after treatment.
There are two things to account for when planning your schedule. First, the 1–3 days of swelling and soreness after Sculptra may overlap with your flight. Second, complete the full 5 days of the 5 5 5 massage at home regardless of when you return. If your flight falls within those 5 days, continue to massage 5 times that day, for 5 minutes each time.
